Put Out into the Deep
Luke 5:1-11
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells Simon to cast his nets into deep water after a long, fruitless night of fishing. Though tired and doubtful, Simon obeys. The result is overwhelming: so many fish that the nets begin to break. Amazed and humbled, Peter falls to his knees, confessing his unworthiness. Yet Jesus responds not with rejection, but with invitation: “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”
We all know what it's like to give our best effort and still come up empty. That was Peter's night: long hours, no results, nothing to show. When Jesus tells him to try again. Peter could have walked away — but he didn't. He trusted, even when it didn't make sense. And that trust brought abundance.
This story is about more than fish. It's about the times in our lives when God asks us to go deeper — into trust, prayer, and courage. When we feel empty, we often discover what we most need.
Going deeper today might mean slowing down to be present, offering a prayer for something heavy, or taking a small step you've been avoiding. However you do it, trust that God meets you there.
May this reflection encourage you today and remind you that when you trust in God’s deep waters, you’ll never come up empty.
